Various sailing links around SE Qld including the marvellous Moreton Bay
North

Bribie Island
1 hr drive
Amazing surf beach, near where we used to live. Bribie is described as  'Brisbane's Island Suburb', although it's a little far for comfortable commuting!
Australia Zoo
1.25 hrs drive (can be accessed via train)
Well worth checking out. Steve Irwin's croctastic creation. Visit loads of native wildlife in an eco-friendly setting. Proceeds donated back to nature conservation in Australia.
Glasshouse Mountains
1 hr drive
Amazing walking, some rather daring, depends how much you like heights and scrambling. If you don't want to scramble there's plenty to see around and about without strenuous walks.
Fraser Island
3.5 hrs drive + ferry crossing
Amazing walking, camping, fishing and 4wding. Access is via ferry from Hervey Bay or Rainbow Beach, and you need a 4wd once on the island. Hiking trips are possible, but you will be competing with the 4wds. Gets busy at peak times. See the Fraser Island commercial guide (good for accommodation, what to do etc)
East

Stradbroke Island
45 mins drive to a 1 hr ferry
If you want to see dolphins, turtles, humpback whales (Jun - Oct), fabulous deserted beaches and a wonderful example of what Qld should be like, go here. Tourism is catching up with Straddie, but you're still well ahead of it if you go soon. You'll never get bored of Straddie. Want to go diving? Call Ken from Point Lookout Scuba. There is another operator, but Ken's trips never fail to amaze!
Moreton Island
45 mins drive to a 1 hr ferry There are also some pics and info available at moreton-island.com and moretonisland.com.au
Moreton Bay Marine Park

Some local history, some info.
South

Lamington N. P.
2 hrs drive
Amazing sub-tropical rainforest, see a multitude of birds and wildlife, spectacular walks through ancient and modern rainforest. Can get relatively chilly in winter as it's all set on a plateau. O'Reilly's rainforest guesthouse provides fab accommodation, also camping available. See also Binna Burra, the other side of the same range.
Mount Warning N.P.
(NSW)
2.5hrs drive
Great campsite available, easy access to amazing northern NSW beaches
Gold Coast & Surfers Paradise
1 hr drive (2 hrs train)
What more needs to be said? High rise accommodation, the costa-del-sol of Australia, but for good reason...the beaches are amazing, definitely one for those who love the more 'city experience'.
Springbrook N.P.
1.5hrs drive
More beautiful views and ancient forests

West

Crows Nest National Park (N.P.)
2 hrs drive
Rock wallabies galore! Fantastic walking tracks and spectaular, very accessible, scenery with sweeping vistas over forested areas. There are some pics on our friends and family photos website, click here (passsword required).
Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary
20 mins drive, easy bus or ferry ride from city
Go cuddle a koala, see roos a'plenty and learn more about Aussie native wildlife. Very worthwhile, and very close to the city.
N.B. Where possible the links go to the Qld Environmental Protection Agency (because i think it's better to have some non-commercial links!) or similar site. I've put a couple of useful commercial links into the comments column too, so just click on the links therein. I'll put some pics on here too once I get time. One day...
